How Upgrader.ie is funded, who we work with for electricity, broadband, waste and home insurance, and how that is kept separate from our editorial content.
Why Upgrader.ie works with partners
Upgrader.ie is free for readers to use. Researching, writing and maintaining the site takes ongoing time and cost, and part of that is funded through the relationships described on this page. We set them out here so you can see clearly how the site makes money and judge our content accordingly.
Two different kinds of relationship are described below: an independent external commercial partner, Selectra Ireland, and a separate related website with the same operator, CompareInsuranceIreland.ie. We explain how each works, and how each is kept separate from our editorial content, in turn.
How the website is funded
Upgrader.ie does not charge readers to use the site and does not carry advertising in the conventional sense. Instead, for a small number of Home Services, relevant pages describe a route for readers who want help comparing or switching, and Paul Hudson, trading as Magenta Online Marketing, may receive a payment when that route leads to a completed customer or service arrangement. This is the main way the site is funded.
Selectra Ireland
Upgrader.ie has partnered with Selectra Ireland for electricity, broadband and waste services. The relevant Electricity, Broadband and Waste pages may provide a route for readers to request comparison or switching assistance. Where a reader uses that route, Selectra handles the resulting enquiry or service arrangement itself; Upgrader.ie does not operate a comparison or switching service.
The operator of Upgrader.ie may receive a referral payment when a referral to Selectra results in a completed customer or service arrangement. We do not publish the rate or structure of that payment. Selectra does not approve, edit or dictate the editorial guidance published on Upgrader.ie: what we write about electricity, broadband and waste is decided independently of this arrangement.
This partnership does not mean every provider, tariff or option available in Ireland has been compared. Selectra compares from its own panel of suppliers, not the whole market, and you remain free to research providers and contact them independently, or to use another comparison route entirely, instead of the one described on these pages.
Home Insurance: CompareInsuranceIreland.ie
CompareInsuranceIreland.ie is a separate related website operated by Paul Hudson, trading as Magenta Online Marketing (opens in a new tab). Unlike Selectra Ireland, it is not an external partner; it has the same operator as Upgrader.ie. CompareInsuranceIreland.ie provides insurance information and access to its own home insurance comparison service, linked from our Home Insurance page. Paul Hudson, trading as Magenta Online Marketing, may benefit commercially when this route results in an enquiry or a completed arrangement.
Upgrader.ie itself does not provide an insurance quotation, recommend a specific policy, arrange cover or handle a claim. Insurance products and any resulting contract are provided by the relevant insurer or regulated intermediary, not by Upgrader.ie. Where CompareInsuranceIreland.ie discloses its own regulatory status or the nature of the insurance service it provides, that disclosure belongs to CompareInsuranceIreland.ie and should not be read as a statement about Upgrader.ie.
Editorial separation
As a matter of editorial policy, Selectra Ireland, as an independent external commercial partner, cannot approve, edit or dictate the guidance published on Upgrader.ie, and being a partner does not entitle it to more favourable coverage than a company that is not. CompareInsuranceIreland.ie is not an external partner in that sense, since it shares the same operator as Upgrader.ie, but the same separation applies in practice: what Upgrader.ie publishes about home insurance is an editorial decision, kept separate from how CompareInsuranceIreland.ie itself operates or is worded. What is and is not compared
Neither Upgrader.ie, Selectra Ireland nor CompareInsuranceIreland.ie compares every provider, tariff, plan or policy available in Ireland. Selectra Ireland works from its own panel of suppliers for electricity, broadband and waste. CompareInsuranceIreland.ie operates its own home insurance comparison service on its own terms. You are always free to research and contact providers or insurers directly, independently of any route described on Upgrader.ie.
Installer relationships
Upgrader.ie does not currently have commercial partnerships with installers listed on our Find Installers pages for solar PV, heat pumps, insulation or windows and doors. Companies appear there because they are registered with SEAI for the relevant measure, not because they have paid to be listed, and a listing is not an endorsement, vetting or recommendation by Upgrader.ie.
